The Time That Big Thing Happened

Was there a milestone event in your life by which all other dates are measured? "That was before I was in that car accident," or "Was that the summer before or the summer after Grandma died?," or "I remember that because it was the same month we got the dog."

What was that event, and what makes it such a defining moment in your life?

  1. Great question!
What my wife said the moment before I asked her to marry me.
Being unable, while my boss looked on, to answer my work phone because my speech was so slurred the day before I first went to Alcoholics Anonymous.
I'm definitely following this blog to hear more great questions!

  2. Thanks for that answer, b&b. I'm particularly gratified that the first person who weighed in on this one had something positive as at least one of their milestone events; from my own cultural background, I was certain this sort of thing always must be a bad event. For me, it was a very serious accident I had that (happily) ended up changing my life in a positive way.

  3. It was college graduation that changed everything. I went from sitting in a classroom to pounding the pavement in a strange city, and there was hardly anything to tie the before and after together.

  4. Rick, your answer makes me wonder how many people would choose something like a specific rite of passage (like a graduation, the day you got your driver's license, your bar mitzvah, the day you left for the army) to respond to this question, and how many would choose something arbitrary (like an accident, the day you met your future spouse, etc.).
