One of my good friends is currently living in Spain. We grew up together. And have somehow managed to become closer in our relationship despite the fact that he has lived thousands of kilometres away from me for our entire adult lives, schooling in the midwestern US and then living for four years + in Peru. Email helps, Skype is amazing, and even regular post has been lovely (it's such a wonderful thing to hold in your hands something, that your distant loved one once held).
